Walk & Work promotes physical activity at work by offering businesses a line of products that employees can use during the workday without taking time out of their day specifically for physical activity.

Our Workplace Solutions include products designed for individuals, as well as, products intended for groups of users to share throughout the day. Individual use products make a great addition to a traditional office, or can be used with an adjustable desk choice. Group use products can be placed in lobbies, activity areas, and other general community areas commonly shared amount employees, guests or clients.

THE POWER OF EDUCATION
We consider good health a privilege that needs to be cherished and nurtured. We aim to create awareness around the impact of prolonged sitting on health. The impact on well-being right now, and overall health in the long run. It’s only through education and awareness that we can create an understanding of the need to be physically active, to mitigate risks of developing non-communicable diseases. To be active in order to improve the quality of life, to improve family stability, and to avoid costs that come with the treatment of diseases, both for individuals and employers.

 

Alongside our journey we support organisations that contribute to the same cause, and make an effort to educate around how to look after yourself to manage your health. In 2015 we’ve contributed to Youth With Diabetes. In 2016 we’re looking to do the same for an organisation that also drives a strong health message through volunteers.

STEPPING INTO WELLNESS
We believe in physical activity as the critical step to move society towards wellness and prevention of illnesses. Changes in the way we live, work, commute, and spend our spare time, have resulted in a society that is sitting too much. This puts society at large into a dangerous position, and at risk of developing an increased % of non-communicable diseases.

 

We also believe that the reasons that have caused us to sit down more are here to stay, and therefore we have to relook the way we approach life and work, bringing in innovative solutions to integrate physical activity in our lives.
HOW WE GOT STARTED
“Drop Dead Healthy”, the third book in a trilogy devoted to self-improvement by American author A.J. Jacobs inspired Jan Folmer to try-out working on a treadmill desk. A.J. Jacobs wrote the book whilst walking on a treadmill desk, covering about 1,200 miles in the process, and considers avoiding to sit the most important health take-away from his 2-year journey exploring every diet plan, workout routine and self-improvement technique.

At the time Cape Town-based Jan Folmer was spending long hours sitting down working in IT, and with no treadmill desks being available in South Africa he decided to build his own. He was hooked, instantly. He found himself to be much more focused and energetic throughout the day. At the same time leisure time became more fun, as the regular walks improved overall fitness levels.

In 2013, realizing that walking & working wasn’t a fad, he decided to partner up with Life Span Fitness, bringing treadmill desks to South Africa.
